I am a huge Dr. Weil fan because his book, "Spontaneous Healing : How to Discover and Embrace Your Body's Natural Ability to Maintain and Heal Itself
" was life-opening, and not only helped me regain my health back, but helped validate many of my feelings that Western medicine namely the pushing of pharmaceuticals to fix everything can interfere rather than support the body's natural abilities to heal. I'm one of those patients who push back on pills because I really abhor them particularly after my experience being on the "happy" pills which actually made me feel more numb than happy.
Anyway, when I saw that Dr. Weil has a restaurant here in Phoenix, you know I was excited like Twilight fans at a movie premiere. Okay, well maybe that's stretching it a bit because there are no hottie vampires at True Food Kitchen, but nonetheless, I was jumping for joy, so I went with the fabulous @kammiek and here's what we ate...
Right off the bat, walking into the place, I already LOVED it. The energy, the decor, the vibe was just resonating with me. Seeing tons of fresh fruit in plain sight made me smile. In fact, it's a very similar feeling I get whenever I walk into a Whole Foods.
For appetizer, we started off with the Herb Hummus. I got a Ginger Nojito to drink which has mint, ginger, lime, honey lemonade and soda water, and boy was that sure refreshing. I could drink a gallon of that stuff.
I also ordered the Edamame Dumplings because you know I just cannot resist anything that has edamame in it. The Edamame Dumplings are basically similar to the Fresh Pea Dumplings over at The Greene House. This isn't too shocking because both places are owned by Fox Restaurant Concepts. I would love to serve these dumplings at a tweetup.
For dishes, Kammie got the Teriyaki Brown Rice bowl with tofu, Asian vegetables, sesame and avocado. I had a bite and it was yummy. The teriyaki was not over powering.
I got the Roasted Autumn Vegetables with Farro & Figs and may favorite part of the whole dish was the Farro & Figs with the squash. I got left overs to go and ate everything for lunch the next day.
If you are a Dr. Weil fanboy or fangirl, you must got to True Food Kitchen. If you want to just try a place that has healthier options and has many choices for mixed palates: vegan, vegetarian, meat lover, then do try it out.
Here's their menu. On Yelp, I was a bit surprised True Food got 3-1/2 stars. I gave it 4 stars. Most of the low scores were due to taste of food and service. I cannot speak of the service because our server was wonderful and very attentive, and I found the food tasty. It's definitely not as salty or sauce covered as many chain like places, and maybe that's the issue. Or, it could be that the flavoring is just not agreeable to those people, who knows.
The pricing is a tad on the high side, but not wallet crushing. I thought it was worth it, and will most definitely be going back and taking all my California friends who come to visit.
